"My dog is usually pleased with what I do,
because she is not infected with the concept of what I 'should' be doing."
~ Lonzo Idolswine

SADIE -- Summer 2005. Sweet, happy Sadie will be 9yo in July. She is S/W with nice blaze. Sadie is an OR who came into the program as a result of divorce. She had been shaved before she came into our program, but will be a fully coated golden Sable with a lovely collar this fall. She had very bad teeth and gums; needed a dental and to have several teeth pulled. She had been in pain, but now that she's had the surgery, she is feeling so much better: a lively, happy girl. Adorable Sadie is now in foster care and doing beautifully. Sadie's foster mom reports that she is very sweet and happy, a total love sponge who loves attention and cuddles on the sofa, though she will not jump up to join her humans unless invited. She is especially bonded to her foster dad, whom she shadows and sleeps on the floor in the family bedroom on dad's side; she is perfectly house trained. She needs a bit of work walking on leash, which she will get as she also loses weight during some needed road work. Sadie has been adopted by her foster family. Since she gathers up any stray shirt of her dad's and sleeps on it and also takes naps with him, it became apparent this devoted girl was already home.
SAGE -- Fall 2000. AKA 'The Little Linebacker.' Sage came into the program as an adorable 6mo, Terrier-Sheltie X from Seabrook; found abandoned in the woods and rescued by a loving person who turned the pup into us after taking her to the vet and caring for her a week. She was treated for worms and sarcoptic mange. Her mom says she quite feisty and loving; full of good humor and surprises, as her mom discovered when Sage gave her a live frog as a present. Sage is learning basic obedience (though she 'forgets' sometimes and leaps into her mom's arms instead) and loves to play fetch. Sage is great with other pets and especially with children. She has been adopted by one of our experienced foster homes and now has her human sister, Samantha, and big Sheltie brother, Woody, to love her all her life.
SALLY (formerly Duchess) -- Summer 1999. Sally was one of our first program rescues and came into the program very shy and reserved. Now five years old, her family reports she is going beautifully, very alert and quite the guard dog. They adore her and are grateful for her addition to their family.
SALLY2 (formerly Sallie)-- .  Found running loose near a busy highway; beautiful, small 6-7yo Tri spayed female with full white collar. No ads were posted for her, and a kind soul who rescued her got her into our program. When brought into the program, she had fleas and skin dermatitis. She has skin allergies, and will need to be on daily medication and special diet the rest of her life. Otherwise, Sally is an active, healthy, affectionate girl who loves to play fetch with a tennis ball and Frisbee, tug-o-war with plush toys, and battle with lawn sprinklers which she is determined to defeat. She is happiest when busy with all her activities and lots of TLC from family members. She loves tummy rubs and cuddling; will plop right over for a good scritching; gets along well with other dogs and with cats; is great with both adults and kids. Sally is a wise, joyful, gentle soul who is filled with love and fun and gives back 100-fold to her family. Sally and new mom fell in love with one another the instant they met. Sally's mom is committed to her care, taking her to an allergist to determine the exact allergens and giving her the weekly shots and medications she needs. Her allergies are under control, and her coat is now long and flowing as she races through her new home on her adventures with mom. Mom and Sally are completely bonded, going on trips for toys and snuggling together in the evenings. Her mom says Sally is a smart, polite little girl; a joy and a comfort.
SAM -- Fall 2002. Beautiful S/W abandoned at a clinic in San Antonio. He was rescued and fostered by our volunteer there, who also assisted in his adoption by the family who have fallen totally in love with this boy who spent a joyous Christmas with them to begin his new life. Sam is now leading a life of luxury, has lost another 5 pounds (he had been very overfed which was a danger to his health), and is becoming an active, svelte, much loved young man.
SAM 2 --.  This gorgeous, sweet boy is an OR due to family health issues. He is a 3yo S/W, with a beautiful full collar,14", 20#. Sam has been vetted, is now UTD, neutered, and tested HW-. His foster parents report he is doing very well: easing into the relationship with the resident Shelties, but was shy with them at first. He is also shy with people, but is warming up each day in his foster home, starting to smile and wag his tail, ask for attention, and want to be close to his foster mom. He has some fearfulness of men, but his foster dad is gently working with him, and Sam will come to him for treats, which he loves and takes very gently. He has started giving Sheltie kisses to his foster mom, will come readily to her for cuddles, and has done some spins. He is eating well and is perfectly house trained. A month into foster care: Sam is playing chase with the resident Shelties, finding his voice in happy games, alerting to strangers at the door, playing with plush toys, allowing his foster dad to give him belly rubs, and crowding around dad's chair for cool treats. Sam has made terrific strides in his rehabilitation has been adopted along with Molly and now lives in Dallas where he is flourishing in the loving care of his family.
BIG SAM This gentle giant (for a Sheltie) was named by our volunteer after the character in Gone with the Wind. He was rescued in Pearland by a kind family who contacted us immediately to give Big Sam the best opportunity to find a wonderful new home. Sam is 4-5yo; 17-18", 45#, regal and handsome with a super gentle personality. He had been wandering in the neighborhood for several days, and all attempts to find his owners were fruitless. His coat was so matted and full of burrs, that it had to be clipped. He is now UTD and tested HW-. Sam did have some grooming issues and was very scared at first, but he settled comfortably into foster care, gets along with the other dogs and a kitty, adores his humans. Sam's foster mom writes: "He looks so much like a big teddy bear, with his beautiful, soul-searching brown eyes and his short, soft, curly coat. (Now while he’s growing back his coat he’s cute, but when it grows back, he will be Mr. Handsome.) And he loves to hug like a teddy bear, too, letting me hold him and cuddle him and giving kisses in return. He was very frightened at first around me and any new person who approached, but he is now relaxing and realizing that no one will abuse him. He seems very grateful and appreciative of the care he gets. He is exceptionally sweet and gentle, walks well on a leash, is housetrained, is very gentlemanly with my Sheltie, and has only barked when chasing the vacuum cleaner. He does sometimes moan and cry when I leave, especially if he knows I’m just outside or in another room where I can hear his pleas for me to come back. He loves car rides, cuddles, chew toys, body rubs. I have bathed him, trimmed his toenails, used electric clippers to give him a Sheltie trim, and groomed him. I just can’t find any negatives to this beautiful boy. He is adorable."  The only caveat about Sam is that children make him nervous, so he should be in an adult home. Wonderful Big Sam has been adopted by his foster mom, Carol, and is clearly adored.
SAMMIE -- OR from Spring, Sammie is a beautiful 1yo S/W male, UTD, neutered, and HW-. He is about 17" and weighed 22# when he first came into the program: is a nice weight for his size now. Sammie is protective of treats and food but otherwise a love. His foster mom has trained him to be more obedient to commands, and he is doing well. Sammie is a lovely, smart, playful, affectionate young dog who brings a lot of energy and love to his new home. He was adopted by an experienced Sheltie home who is delighted to have him and will continue working with his needs.
SAMMY (formerly Hemingway) -- Fall 2001. From Galveston shelter: beautiful 7yo Sable/Merle with one blue eye; full collar, milkstain blaze; tipped ears. He was heartworm positive but successfully completed treatments with no side effects. This boy is gentle, quiet, and sweet; gets along well with other pets, adults and children. His foster family adored him and wrote tenderly about "Mr. Man's" lovely disposition. Sammy's adopted mom is very impressed with this beautiful, sweet boy. She has re-named him Sammy which fits him better, and she enjoys bringing him to the picnics to show how beautiful he has become.

SAMMY 2 --Summer 2004. From Montgomery County Animal Control Shelter, Sammy is a lively 8mo Golden S/W with full collar who loves to be loved on. He and what we believe is his sister, Sonia (now adopted and renamed Cedes), came into the shelter together as strays--in horrific condition, painfully thin and with severe skin infections. Sammy is a rangy pup: 14" and weighed only 15# because he had not had enough to eat in his life, much less proper care. His puppy immunity has protected him, though, and he is HW-. He is now UTD, but was under observation for correct diagnosis and treatment of the severe skin infections he has lived with most of his baby life. He has been treated and is doing much better; has now been neutered. Despite the condition he was in, Sammy is exuberant and joyfully responsive to cuddling. Both pups showed behavioral signs of having been hit in their lives, but have now adjusted to TLC: once they are picked up and loved on, they burrow into their humans' arms and don't want to let go, which is a tribute to their gentle Sheltie spirits. From the loving way they behaved toward one another, we think they had been on their own and taking care of each other all their short lives. The first photo is of Sammy with our kind vet tech, Jake. Two months later, like his sister, Sammy's coat is coming in (he needs to grow into his puppy ears!); he  is relaxed and happy in foster care. Sammy's foster mom says he is a delight, a complete love who moved right in and settled into his new routine, learning the ropes very quickly, eating well as he has a lot of catching up to do. He is extremely well behaved, adores people, especially his foster mom and grandpa, and other dogs (he hangs out with his foster brother and plays with a foster sister constantly). Lucky Sammy now has his own forever home: he was adopted by his foster mom's brother and is living the wonderful life he deserves.

SAMMY 3 -- Fall 2004. Sammy is a lively 1-1.5yo S/W who was found in Round Rock, and the rescuer made sure he got into our program after he couldn't locate the owners. The rescuer would love to have kept Sammy because he's an adorable boy, but a bit too active for the rescuer's senior Sheltie. His coat was a bit thin and dry because he's apparently spent much of his life outdoors, but it is already softening with good care, and he will be glorious as a fully coated male in a few months. Sammy is affectionate, freely giving kisses; energetic and wants to play. He is still in that adolescent stage and will need lots of toys, chews, and attention. But he is housetrained and obedience trained: knows 'sit' and 'down.' Sammy is very affectionate and sweet; he is also an extremely smart, young male. He has been happily adopted by a family who will work with him in his obedience classes.
SAMMY 4 -- Winter 2004. Cutie-pie Sammy is into the program from Williamson Cty shelter. He is a S/W, 4-5yo. The shelter kindly brought him UTD and shaved him because his mats were so thick he couldn't walk. Sammy had successful treatment for HW disease. He is sweet with an adorable face and perfect sheltie tipped ears. When we received him, he was afraid of the outdoors and very timid. He has learned that the outside world is fun, and he knows he's in good hands now as his personality continues to grow week by week. Here is his foster mom's report: "don't even think the word adorable is sufficient for Sammy. He is cute, cute, cute.  He looks like a little Pooh Bear, with the little black eyes. He is very comical, and very sweet. He is a sweetheart!" Lucky little Sammy was adopted along with Zoe 3 by his loving new family.
SAMPSON (Formerly 'Spunky') -- Summer 2003. Handsome 2yo OR turned into Christ-Yoder Animal Shelter in Austin along with Taffy who has also been adopted. They called us immediately, relinquishing the dogs to our program. Samson was our first Sheltie flown in by our "Flying Shelties" program. Air Traffic controllers were on task and happy to guide our little blessing into Houston. Both Samson and our volunteer pilot, Douglas, made the trip without incident, and Samson landed at the airport grinning from ear to ear because he knew he was safe at last. Samson is a beautiful S/W, though he came into the shelter dirty and covered in fleas. He came into the program relatively healthy but dirty, matted, and covered in fleas. His foster mom found three wounds on him that appear to be cigar burns which are healing without infection now. Yet, for all he's been through, once Samson trusts his human, he comes in to snuggle, lays his head on your chest, and gazes with warm, adoring eyes. In his foster home, he has proven to be very sweet and loving; adores being brushed; loves to play in the back yard. Sampson has been adopted by a family who adore him and are teaching him the adventures of long hikes and the joy of being a cherished Sheltie.
SANDY-- Summer 2003. From Harris County Animal Control, 1-1.5yo CHW female. Sandy came into the program covered in fleas, shaved, afflicted with tape and hookworms, and HW+. She is very sweet but also was very scared, showing behavioral indications she had been beaten. Her foster parents worked very gently with her in foster care as she recovered her health and learned to trust. After one month in the program, her coat began coming in, and she had a new self-confidence. Cute little Sandy is a sweet, quiet girl who completed her heartworm treatment without side effects. One evening while gazing deeply into her foster mom's eyes, Sandy told her mom she was not interested in breaking in another home because she was already home; Delores agreed whole-heartedly, and there Sandy will remain, adored forever as she deserves. She now has mom, dad, and Sheltie sister, Molly, also adopted from our program.
SAPPHIRE (Formerly Sherry 1) -- Summer 2001. From Harris County Shelter.  18mo Bi-Black who had a skin condition we had assessed.  It is a moderate dermatitis which is responding beautifully to good nutrition and bathing with hypoallergenic shampoo; she doesn't look like the same dog who came into the program, now very beautiful with coat coming in and showing great promise. Sapphire is very sweet, lively, funny, whip smart, and affectionate; she gets along well with other pets and children. She loves to cuddle, putting her head on her caretaker's shoulder. She is learning basic obedience, which she is picking up quickly. Everyone who meets Sherry falls in love with this happy girl. She has been adopted by a family who report she is settling in beautifully. They love each other dearly, and Sapphire has become a 'spoiled' little girl.
SARA (formerly Sara Jeanne) -- Spring 2002. 3yo OR from Pasadena.  When she was a puppy, she was confined to the back yard and an Igloo dog house because she had accidents -- rather than the house training and socialization she deserved. She was free-fed and was overweight; needed to lose 10 pounds, but has already become svelte on her diet. At first, she did not know what was expected of her and was understandably confused and shy. She also had not been vaccinated or given HW preventive since puppy days. Of course this girl was HW+ because of the neglect. Sara handled the HW treatment with no side effects, and is now completely out of her shell and enjoying life as she deserves. Sara has a loving new mom and Sheltie sister, Kylie.  Mom adores them both and even has a nanny for them when she must be away during the day.
SASHA (formerly Shaunte) -- Spring 2002. This beautiful girl came into the program as a 9yo S/W; very healthy except she recently had a severe infection and needed to have part of her tail amputated. She was born on Christmas Day, 1992. She is a beautiful, sweet-faced Sheltie who gets along with other dogs; is very affectionate; lively and curious, can be both active and quiet; she simply goes with the flow of the family.  Sasha attended the spring picnic and had a wonderful time meeting folks and other Shelties. She has been adopted by a physician and lives in the Texas Medical Center with all of Hermann Park as her playground.
SASSY -- Winter 2001. OR from Bear Creek; 4yo mahogany female, 20#, full collar, socks, tipped ears  She is vaccinated and tested for heartworms; negative. We had her spayed and in foster care for a couple of weeks for behavioral assessment where she proved to be very sweet and extremely active--might enjoy obedience and agility classes.  Sassy has been adopted by Billie and Joe Stafford who want to work her in therapy; Sassy has already been certified with Faithful Paws, a Pet Therapy group sponsored by Bellaire United Methodist Church. The picture below is of her first therapy visit to the Sheltering Arms assisted living facility. The family came to the spring picnic with Sassy dressed to the nines and oh so cute. It was a wonderful adoption for this little girl and her family. Our thanks to the Papes for another great job of foster care.
SASSY 2 -- Summer 2003. Adorable 6yo S/W; tiny girl.  She is an OR: family wanted her to have more attention than they were giving her. Her foster mom says she is delightful: very sweet and cuddly; moved right in and is completely relaxed with her foster Sheltie sister and brother. She loves her toys and has made up a game of pulling them out of the basket one by one and tossing them into the family's pool. She plays chase with other dogs; will play with her humans until they've had enough; then it's cuddle time. She has been adopted by one of our long-time families who saw her on the web site; quickly visited her and happily adopted her on the spot. Sassy now has Sheltie brother, Skyler, also adopted from our program, in addition to her proud mom and dad.
SCOTTIE -- [Formerly Carmel] Winter 2005. This precious 3-4mo pup was found wandering alone and relinquished to our program after there were no responses to ads. He was quickly adopted by his ecstatic new dad who reports this youngster is learning basic obedience, loves his toys and treats, has learned to fetch, and is thoroughly enjoying his new life, meeting new people in the neighborhood on his walks. This baby now has the love and care he deserves and will never be lost again. His dad says "he is learning new commands pretty easily.  He now knows how to sit, lay down and shake.  He does these before every meal (his version of saying grace!).  We have been working on a spin command with a hand signal, which is a pointed index finger in a circular motion.  Unless he is real distracted, he is starting to do it on the first or mostly second/third command.  Pretty smart guy!  He loves to go to the local park and try to chase the birds or leaves blowing in the wind." Scottie is now almost a year old, is housetrained, and adores both his dad and his squeaky toys.
SCOTTIE -- Summer 2004. From Montgomery County Animal Shelter, Scottie is a 7-8yo Tri; was in terrible condition, but recovered beautifully in the loving care of his foster mom. Scottie is a sweet boy but was extremely depressed when he first came into the program: he had been on a sad journey for a very long time. He is a classic Tri Sheltie w/ nice markings, perfectly tipped ears, and full collar. When we picked him up from the shelter, his coat was so matted that he had to be shaved so his skin could heal and to get his coat back to the fullness it should have. His coat has come back in, and it’s gorgeous, soft as silk. However, he has also developed Cushings Disease which we are treating with medication, but he is responding to the daily medication and is obviously feeling much better. Scottie is much happier and brighter; no longer as shy; he has completely bonded with his family. He plays with the resident dogs; loves a good game of chase. He has discovered toys and carries them around, delighted when he can get them to squeak. He has also learned to adore his walks in the park and rushes to get his leash on first. He now smiles all the time, barks happily when appropriate, follows his mom around, and gives lots of kisses. Scottie had probably never had toys or so much love and attention in his entire life, and he is now a new dog. He has quite a fan club in our program as many of our members have worked with Scottie: he's a wonderful boy, dearly loved by his cheering fans. Scottie came to the Dog Show and picnics; he is now absolutely sparkling with healthy, beauty, and happiness; he had a wonderful time: calm and behaved; sweet to everyone who wanted to pet him or give him a treat. Scottie has been adopted by his devoted foster mom, HSS volunteer Linda Kozac .
SCOTTIE 2 -- Winter 2006. Scottie, along with Chloe, came into the program from our good friends in La Rescue, who are still recovering from Katrina, and we are continuing to assist them. This story is particularly sad as La Rescue adopted these two wonderful dogs a couple of years ago to a family they trusted who did not take care of the dogs and then dumped them on a local shelter, which fortunately was in touch with rescue so the dogs could be quickly retrieved. Scottie was so filthy and matted, he had to be shaved. He is a 6yo Tri; unfortunately tested HW+; he completed the treatment without complications and is now well. Scottie has become a friendly boy who freely give kisses has become attached to his family, especially his sister. He is a friendly, outgoing boy, but a talker who minds when he is advised to stop. He is crate and housetrained, loves his daily walks, gets along great with other dogs. Scottie is on a maintenance dose of thyroid pills. Adorable Scottie has been adopted by his foster home, co-coordinator Linda and her family: he was already home, and the picture of him adoring his mom was taken at the dog show, where he had a wonderful time.
SCOTTY (formerly Will) -- Fall 2001. From Montgomery County Animal Service Center: 2-3yo S/W. He had been lost for quite a while and was eating out of trash bins. He was very scared in the shelter; but in rescue, he settled in and became all Sheltie, doing floor pats and spins with happy grins. Scotty tested HW+ and also positive for hookworms; he completed all treatments with no complications. During medical work-ups, our vet. discovered buckshot in the x-rays: Scotty was apparently shot while he was lost or used for target practice. The doctor says the buckshot is not close to any vital organs and will not cause him problems. Scotty gets along with other dogs and loves children. He is a beautiful, happy boy in his new home with mom, dad, brother, and sister.  He has passed his shy stage and is fully bonded with his loving family.  He went on a family trip to Florida and had a wonderful time.  The family is totally in love with him, and he is now a happy, secure, gorgeous Sheltie.
SCOUT -- Spring 2002. Beautiful, loyal, 6-7yo Tri from the Galveston County Shelter. He was so filthy and matted that we had to give him a ‘lion cut,’ but his coat came back in beautifully. At first he was very scared and uneasy, but is now completely relaxed, a real sweetheart who is a wonderful people-Sheltie. His beautiful, fluffy tail is very expressive and always wagging. A sense of curiosity about his surroundings earned him the name Scout. A smart watch dog who is house trained and knows basic tricks, Scout makes a great friend as well. He has a sparkle in his eye and a proud spring in his step. Scout has a slight heart murmur: we had him thoroughly examined, including EKG and sonogram, and our vet assures us he should live a long, normal Sheltie life. Scout has been adopted by a family who had been studying Scout's description on our web site. One evening they were watching the Discovery Channel when a program about canine heart murmurs came on. They looked at one another and decided this was no coincidence and immediately contacted us. Scout is now loved in his forever home with a devoted family and Sheltie sister, Molly. His mom sent this updated family portrait in Jan 2004. She reports that "Scout is the wonderful, smart, sweet sheltie who came to live with us in May 2002. We adore him and think the feeling is mutual. Thanks for all you do to unite precious beings like him with families like ours."
SCOUT 2  -- Summer 2005. This handsome pup came into the program named "Outlaw," renamed "Fenway" by his foster family and "Scout" by his forever home. Scout and Bandit 6 are 1yo brothers who came into the program because the family didn't want them any longer. The boys are in that gangly stage and had been shaved before they came into the program, so they need to grow coat over the winter; most males are not fully coated until at least age 2, sometimes 3. Scout is the larger of the two at 16" and 19# and has the wider blaze and more outgoing personality: in foster care, he learned the ropes about activities he never had before; really wanted to play and worked on feeling out the other dogs for how receptive they will be. Both boys were delighted to be starting new lives. Scout's family writes: "He is such a joy to have around, and we just can't believe how quickly he learns new things. He's doing great on his leash, now enjoys being brushed, has figured out that toys are actually for playing with (and even plays with his own toys rather than the kids' toys), and is learning to obey the kids' commands rather than just ours. His new coat is coming in beautifully, and we've just experienced giving him his first bath...it actually went quite well! We were recently playing at the park, and a disabled child was so excited to see a puppy that I told her dad that it was ok for her to pet him if she wanted. I was so proud of Scout for being calm and gentle with her, she couldn't speak but kept signing 'thank you' over and over and had the biggest smile on her face! Guess you can tell that we love our Scout!!"
SETH -- Fall 2000. From Citizens for Animal Protection.  Seth is a 2-3yo Mahogany S/W with incredibly expressive eyes.  Seth and Brodie were found together after apparently being lost for some time, and we kept them together in foster care, though they were adopted separately. They were very dirty, with severely matted coats and had to be shaved, but both have gorgeous coats now and successfully completed HW treatments. Both boys were apparently abused and were fairly shy in the early going but have come out of their shells and are very happy. Though they had been abandoned, both boys were quickly housetrained and have proven to be sweet, smart guys. Seth has been adopted by a family who moved heaven and earth to do the paperwork, home check, and then drive to visit him. They fell in love immediately. Seth is now an only dog with kitty companions. He gets all his mom and dad's attention, walks, car rides, toys, nutritious food, and love. He has his own quilt and pillow beside his parents' bed where he has slept since his adoption. His mom says they are "stupid in love with him."
SHADOW (formerly Harrison) -- Spring 2003. 3yo in April, beautiful, happy S/W OR from Spring, this is a lovely boy who likes other dogs and kids; loves to play. He also likes to be groomed and is a cuddler; very loving and affectionate, a complete love sponge. He enjoys walks and has some basic obedience training: comes when called and sits for treats. Shadow's new family, which includes Mom, Dad, and Pom brother, Pooh Bear, are thrilled with him, completely in love with this sweet boy. Shadow moved right in, started sleeping piled up in the bed with everyone else, and 'shadows' his mom, hence his new name. They all came to the spring picnic, and Dad reports the boys are having some good romps these days. They will soon all be retiring together to the Valley and spending a lot of time on the beach.
SHADOW 2 -- Spring 2004.  Shadow and his pal, Skippy, came into the program because their mom had to go into nursing care. She is very grateful her babies are safe. These two boys adore one another, and despite what they've been through in the confusing changes in their lives, they are happy, upbeat, and just delightful. Shadow is a shadowed S/W; 11yo, shaded S/W, 13-14. He is bright, very active, loves to play with his toys. He also came to the Highland Games and spring picnic with Skippy and had a wonderful time socializing with everyone. Shadow and Skippy have been adopted together by their delighted family and are enjoying lots of TLC and romps in a big back yard.
SHANE -- Summer 2000. Thirteen-week-old Shane came to HSS from Montgomery County Shelter.  He's adorable and perfectly healthy. The former owners apparently bred their Sheltie, who had 4 pups; they placed three, then said they 'didn't have room' for this one.  He's precious: we believe he is a purebred, possibly a white-factored Sheltie according to Sheltie rescue friends; but he may also be a mix, possibly with Jack Russell Terrier. He is a great little guy, cute as a button, plump and sturdy--full of fun, racing and caroming around his foster home in wonderful adventures; playing happily with other dogs and checking out the cats. However, during a rumble in his foster home, he got his foot stepped on by one of the bigger guys, suffering two hairline fractures. He was in a bandage-cast for two weeks, but quickly learned to use that leg as a prop while he continued his adventures, moving almost as fast as ever. He recovered quickly. Shane was socialized with lots of adults, kids, and furkids--until his adoptive family saw his photo and description on our web site. This wonderful couple fell in love, moving quickly to adopt this boy, and he is now a 3-year-old, happily in his forever home.
SHASTA -- Fall 2001. From League City. Gorgeous 7yo Sable/White OR.  Shasta came into the program very healthy; a sweet, friendly girl who does not look 7. She has been adopted by her foster mom, long-time HSS volunteer, Lorrie and her family, who fell in love with her; she has moved right in with mom, dad, siblings, 3 Sheltie brothers and program Sheltie sister, Rosie, as though she has always been part of the family.
SHEENA -- Winter 2004. From BARC, Sheena is 4-5yo; 15-16 inches, 34 pounds, has had puppies at some point. She has hookworms, which we are treating, but is HW-. She is now spayed and UTD. Understandably scared in the shelter, Sheena is happy to be rescued and starting to relax; she was already nudging her rescuer for petting on the way from the shelter. From the appearance of her coat, she had been kept outside in her previous life; it will take a few months to come in, but she's going to be a beauty. She also needs to lose just a bit of weight and have some walks and playtime to tone her muscles. In foster care she appears already housetrained, gets along fine with the resident dogs, settled right in and slept on her foster parents' bed the first night: so happy, relieved, and tired after her journey that she didn't move all night. This is a very sweet girl who is now cherished in her forever home.
