"No matter how little money and how few possessions you own, having a dog makes you rich."
~ Louis Sabin

NALA -- Summer 04. (name from the Lion King) along with Abu is an OR due to family illness. Nala is a golden sable, very outgoing and sweet: she was happily greeting everyone in the clinic. She is about 5yo, with a nice coat, but it was a bit dry and w/ flea allergies. We treated the condition as it developed into staph infections, but she is now recovered, and her coat is filling in and becoming glossy. Nala and Abu both did beautifully in foster care, eating well and enjoying the company of the families and resident dogs. Nala especially likes strolling and exploring with them in the family's large back yard; she has become very perky and spunky. Her foster family says she's a complete love bunny, a total love sponge they are really enjoying. Nala loves to cuddle and enjoys gentle massages; she is happily greeting the family when they come home; is learning to play; doing spins, and now knows basic obedience commands. She is sweet, patient, mild-tempered, and gives back love with a big smile and hug. This adorable lady has been adopted by her delighted forever home. They had recently lost their 14yo Sheltie, and needed Nala as much as she did them. Her mom sat with her in the back seat, and they cuddled all the way home.
NICK -- Fall 2000. Nick came into the program as a 2yo S/W OR because he barked too much and had been confined outdoors. He is 14", with a full white collar and blaze; however, his coat was thin and scraggly from exposure. He was adopted by HSS co-coordinator, Joan, and is now a 5yo, fully coated little powerhouse, but very sweet and affectionate. Nick loves to play tug-o-war and catch with the tennis ball, doing dives and mid-air leaps to catch the ball with great skill. He went through obedience class and is now perfectly trained, though he does bark to alert and despises thunderstorms; needs cuddling during those episodes. He is active, funny, cuddly, extremely playful. He now has mom, dog and kitty siblings he adores and a Senegal parrot who cheerfully shells and feeds him peanuts from her playpen.
NIKKI (formerly London) -- Fall 2001. Gorgeous 2yo S/W OR. She immediately bonded with her new dad and mom and is enjoying cuddles, family and friends, and her huge back yard. She is playing ball, going for walks, enjoying her enriched new diet after her dad took her to the vet for full check-up; and as we urge all our homes, she has been microchipped. Her dad sends us wonderful updates of his beloved girl who is flourishing in her new home. She had a terrific Holiday and is clearly adored, looking happier and more beautiful with every update. Nikki's dad has recently adopted Jackson, and the family is now complete.
NILES -- Summer 2004. Niles was dumped with Mariah over night in the take-in box at MCAC, apparently by a breeder. He was covered in fleas, had hooks, and was HW+. Niles is about 3yo, a spunky Mahogany S/W with a great coat. He never met a stranger and prances; very cutely full of himself. Unfortunately, during treatment, Niles had a severe reaction--an embolism (worm clot from the die-off during treatment) pressing on his spine and causing hindquarter paralysis and incontinence--a very rare complication. He was in the hospital for treatment to dissolve the clot; a wonderful vet tech took him home at night and on the weekends. He recovered, though he still had some initial weakness in his hindquarters. Niles is now well, his playful self again, and was quickly adopted by his delighted family in Austin. He is a star pupil in his obedience class and has earned his Canine Good Citizen certificate.
OREO [Formerly Cole 2] -- Winter 2004. From Texas City Shelter, Oreo is 1yo, very active, bi-black. Though he had never had experience walking on leash, Cole is very sweet and is learning quickly. Cole unfortunately tested HW+ but handled the treatment very well. Cole is absolutely adorable, extremely smart, doing well in his housetraining, wants to be very active and was hard to keep quiet during treatment: the foster family thinks after he's well he might be an awesome agility dog. He loves other dogs and loves his toys; he also does very well with children. However, he had a suspicious patch on the bridge of his nose which we had tested. He has a very minor bout with demodectic mange (the inherited type, not contagious, and usually a flare-up due to stress) and was successfully treated.  Cole loves to sleeps pressed close to his human: and in his loving new foster home now has a permanent sleeping buddy.
OZZIE -- Fall 2004.  Ozzie is a gorgeous 7yo blue merle, with very expressive eyes. He bounces and prances, does sheltie spins and gives lots of kisses. Ozzie has a wonderful, sweet, easy going personality and gets along well with other dogs. He likes to sleep at the foot of the bed, is learning how to play tug and catch a ball. He loves a rawhide chew. Ozzie has nice manners and will sit very attentively waiting for a treat. His coat was a bit thin, but is now coming in beautifully with nutrition and care. He has been joyously adopted by his new family who adore him, as does his new best friend, Sheltie sister, Meli.

Before Adoption, all HSS Shelties are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and treated for initial ailments as possible within the scope of our rescue program.
