MACK -- Fall 2004. This beautiful 3yo Tri had been tied to a tree for months in the owner's yard until a concerned neighbor convinced the family to relinquish Mack to our program. Though he was worried at first, he settled into foster care very well and proved to be a sweet, lovely boy. Mack was quickly adopted into his forever home and is now enjoying the loving, comfortable life he deserves. |

MADDIE -- Fall 2003. From the SPCA, Maddie is approximately 8-10yo, shaded S/W, small on a delicate frame. She is an adorable girl, but extremely shy; she probably couldn't figure out what happened to her after all these years that she ends up in a shelter and then rescue. Maddie and Callie were picked up together by the SPCA. Maddie came to the 5th anniversary picnic, but was still so scared and confused by what had happened to her. So everyone just loved on her and reassured her. Maddie needed to be in a quiet home that gives her time to relax and shows her a lot of patience and understanding. In foster care, she gradually gained confidence, and then in her foster home she found exactly the love and care she needs and deserves. Her new mom, Laurel, is comfortable working with older dogs and understands Maddie is very shy: together they are making a new home and will fill it with love and devotion. |

MADISON -- Spring 2003. From a shelter near Dallas; dumped by a puppy miller who turned in a total of five Shelties she was apparently through breeding or couldn't sell. The dogs were all scheduled to be put down, so HSS and the two Dallas rescue groups we work closely with got them out literally in the nick of time. D/FW Rescue kindly helped us with transport. All the dogs were filthy, covered in fleas and seed ticks; and all were sick with kennel cough. Madison is a very sweet and affectionate 2-3yo Tri girl. She craves attention and loving; very friendly with other dogs. Her coat is thin, and she is underweight; she may have had puppies recently. She had a rough time with whip and hook worms, in addition to kennel cough. The shelter conditions these dogs endured compromised them even further: Maddy experienced infection at the spay surgery incision because she was obviously carrying bacteria within her system from filthy conditions experienced for the 30 days in the shelter. She had to have a drain put into the incision site for a few days and be placed on strong antibiotics, but she responded well and completely recovered. Maddy is an adorable girl who is going to be a wonderful companion in her new home: they fell in love with her photo and story and then totally when they met and adopted her. |

MADISON --Spring 2005. This adorable 5-6yo Tri girl was a runner in Spring for a month--no response to flyers, and she proved difficult to catch; we got the call about her from a kind resident who was making sure she had food, and with the help of two wonderful rescuers, managed to trap and bring her in. She was of course filthy, covered in burrs and fleas, but after a bath she proved to be both winsome and gorgeous. She so loves her baths now that she preens and prances as though she's been for a spa treatment. No more lonely travels for this girl: Madison has been adopted by her rescuer and foster mom, Carol, and she will have the loving care she deserves the rest of her life. |

MAGGIE -- Spring 2003. Gorgeous OR from the Woodlands, Maggie is 2yo and healthy, except she needed to lose weight, which we started in her foster home. She is a wonderful girl, very active and athletic, and loves to wrestle with her foster Sheltie brother. She completely adores her humans and needs to be close to them; does not want to be crated or gated out of sight at night, but will sleep happily in her humans' bedroom. Maggie has basic obedience commands, likes tennis balls and is learning to fetch. She recently attended the Highland Games and had a great time. She also met her forever home and has a new dad who is very happy with his beautiful girl. |

MAISIE -- Fall 2004. This pretty little girl from Georgetown, where she had been dumped in the finder's back yard, is a possible Border Collie-Sheltie mix. Maisie is 11mo, very active and sweet. She is a cute little firecracker: a busy, happy, loving youngster, full of kisses and in love with life; she stands on her hind feet and claps her forepaws with joy. Maisie would enjoy obedience and agility classes and has been adopted into a home where her mom will work her as a performance dog in addition to giving her all the TLC she deserves. |

MANDY -- Winter 2003. 1yo Golden Sable female. She was dumped in the drop-off box at Harris County Shelter. Over night, she was in a cage with larger dogs; one of them jumped her and broke one of her rear legs. We brought Mandy into our program immediately; took care of her vetting, and then she had open reduction surgery to put a pin in the leg. She spent two months in recovery period in foster care, having to be very quiet because there was danger of fluid build-up in the hip. She is now well, the leg healed, and she has become extremely playful. Mandy is super affectionate, very sweet; now house trained, and adores toys. When she first came into the program, she was scared and worried; under weight by several pounds, and in pain. She is now completely healthy, extremely happy and self-confident. After her recovery, Mandy was quickly adopted by her new family who watched her progress on the web site, visited her in her foster home, and came to claim her at the Highland Games. They love her so much and have even done a web page for her at http://home.earthlink.net/~dmpkcp71/_wsn/page3.html |

MANDY 2 -- Spring 2005/ This beauty came into the program from BARC. She is a S/W female, about 3-4yo; very sweet. She was so happy to be rescued, she put her nose forward and boogied all the way to the rescue car. She battled an UTI and also had sores on her feet. She was treated for both ailments and recovered nicely. Mandy's delighted family says she is wonderful: "She is smart as a whip, and so well trained. She listens to every word I say. My husband found the key to her heart: she responds well to treats and if he starts loving on our dog, Lucky, she can see how much affection Lucky gets from Lou, and is beginning to realize there is nothing to fear. I told you she is so smart! She will teach us all!" |

MARCIE -- Summer 2002. From Montgomery County Service Center, adorable 2yo Sheltie/Aussie Mix. She is a cream-colored S/W, with the cropped tail of the Aussie. Marcie tested HW+ but completed the treatments without side effects. This girl has the best of both great breeds. Everyone who meets her really likes Marcie because she is super sweet; freely gives kisses; perfectly house trained. However, Marcie is an alpha female with other dogs and needed special placement. She was adopted through the joint efforts of HSS, All Aboard Kennels, and Montgomery County SPCA. She went to her delighted home just in time to celebrate her first Christmas with them. |

MARCIE 2 -- Winter 2005. Marcie was rescued in Coldspring by a kind person who brought her into Houston and contacted us. This little darling is about 6yo; very friendly and sweet. Marcie was quickly adopted by a long-time HSS family who had lost both their Shelties within a year of one another. Marcie is helping to heal their hearts while they give her the loving home she deserves. |

MARGO -- Fall 2004. This beautiful girl is from Austin; relinquished by a family who found her and after a while decided they could not keep her and contacted rescue. She is a S/W, about 5-6yo, a complete doll who was very happy to be rescued; her foster mom says Margo walked right into her home and flipped over for a delicious belly rub. Unfortunately she was HW+ and had to go through the treatment, which she handled beautifully. She also has a limp; our doctor says at some point in her life she had a crushing foot injury, and may have some arthritis later, which Cosequin and weight loss are helping. But nothing stops this girl from being delighted with all the love and attention she is getting. She attended the Spring Bark in the Woodlands and had a wonderful time. Margo was quickly adopted after her recovery and is enjoying the love of her forever home. |

MARIAH -- Summer 2004. Mariah was dumped over night in the take-in box at MCAC along with Niles, apparently by a breeder. She is about 2yo, was covered in fleas, and was HW+. Mariah is a beautiful shaded S/W who had a blown coat due to the disease and breeding. She is gentle and sweet, becoming spunky and affectionate in foster care. She was bathed and treated for the fleas; and had a split treatment for the HW disease. She had a bit of reaction to the first injection, but is recovered nicely Her new family watched her progress on our web site and visited her in her the foster home. They fell in mutual love, and has soon as Mariah was well, they adopted her into their devoted home. |

MARIUS -- Fall 2003. S/W, 3-4yo; was relinquished to our program by HCAC. Marius was a very sick boy: he came into the program with sarcoptic mange and oozing sores, ear infections, hook worms (the most his doctor had ever seen on a slide), whip worms, coccidia (intestinal parasites), ticks, and anemia. And if all that were not enough to make a dog feel very bad, Marius was HW+, and he has severe dysplasia in both hips that will require major surgery after we get him well. He had been neglected all his short life, and the shelter picture does not truly show the horrific shape he was in. We first had to cure the mange, which involved weeks of dips and treatments during which he lived in our clinic, with the staff members all involved in his care and falling in love with him because he is such a charming boy. We have several wonderful clinics who have assisted our program for years, but want to give special thanks to Kingsland Animal Hospital for their dedication to Marius. He had to have his matted coat shaved and bathed; had Revolution applied (it combats the mites). He had repeated treatments with Revolution over the next three weeks; antibiotics for a couple of weeks; special baths and dips; the awful crusty patches started to drop off after a few days' treatments. Since Marius was so sick, he was running a high fever, which the clinic treated and quickly got down to normal temp. Though Marius was shy for our pictures, he is very sweet, wagging his tail, and has a spring in his step. Like so many of our Shelties, this little boy knows he’s been rescued and is thrilled to finally be getting help. However, only after we cured the mange and other parasites could Marius then go through HW treatment – another 4-6 weeks -- and have the hip surgery. Of course, this boy is intact and will need to be neutered after his full recovery. Two Month Update: Marius finished his regimen of dips for the mange and began HW treatment without incident. Marius is now released from the hospital who oversaw his care so lovingly and is in one of our loving foster homes. He greeted mom and kids with joy, took on a Saturday adventure in the car with grace, while continuing to kiss his foster brother. He is terrific with people, ignores kitties, fine with other dogs. Everyone who meets Marius adores him because he is so sweet and courageous. Four Month Update: Marius has successfully completed HW treatments, has had his orthopedic surgery on the worst hip and is responding well: came out of the experience with his tail wagging. He recovered 10 days in his foster home; and is now in his forever home, the parents of his doctor, where he will complete his recovery. He will remain a part of our program family and have the best possible medical care as he will need more surgery on the other hip. Our profound thanks to Kingsland and to Marius's three foster homes for helping us save this wonderful boy. |

MASON -- (Formerly Weaver) Fall 2004 This lovely boy was picked up as a stray in Gatesville. Mason is 2-3yo, Golden S/W. He had ticks and tape worms and also tested HW+ and had to undergo the treatment. Mason handled the treatment beautifully and is a now a healthy, sweet boy. He came to the 6th Anniversary Picnic and had a wonderful time, as shown in his picture. Mason is now happily adopted and enjoying the love and care he deserves. In addition to his new family, he also now has a sister also adopted from the program: Diamond Rio re-named Dixie. |

MAX -- Spring 2002. 1yo, Golden S/W OR from Magnolia. Max came into the program in perfect health; is great with other pets; very friendly, lively, and affectionate. On a recent outing it became apparent Max adores children, and at the recent Highland Games he behaved with joy and outgoing nature with both kids and adults. Max is a gorgeous, energetic youngster whose coat is coming in gloriously after being shaved by the previous owner. He would be a great candidate for obedience and agility classes as he is extremely alert, intelligent, and eager to please with a beautiful stance and Sheltie demeanor. He loves to play with other dogs, swim in the pool, and rumble with his humans. Max has been adopted by a family who is delighted with their adorable new boy. He is sleeping with mom and dad and happily playing with his new brother. |

MAX 2 -- Spring 2004. OR adopted through the family and our program and moved into new home with his brother, Asa, who is an HSS Sheltie. |

MAX 3 -- Winter 2004. Max is a gorgeous 5yo shaded S/W OR from Conroe: very healthy little boy except for needing to lose quite a bit of weight. His foster mom says he smiles all the time, loves the kids, gets along great with resident dogs and kitties. He loves belly rubs, watching the world outside the window, and playing with his Sheltie foster siblings: he LOVES to play and is very active. Max is also great on leash, a dream on his walks. His foster mom pronounces him a complete doll, the perfect Sheltie who will thoroughly entertain his new home. He was joyfully adopted by an adoring family whose mom says he's the love of her life. He has lost another 5#, and the family is continuing to work on his diet. Max loves his mom's music students who give him a lot of attention and bring him new toys. This cutie had been an outside dog, but is so smart and sweet that he quickly became house trained and is thoroughly enjoying his luxurious new life. |

MAXXIE (formerly Brandy) -- Fall 2001. Found in Tomball at a busy intersection; she jumped gratefully into the finder's car. Maxxie is a small, 2yo tri female, very sweet, loving, and active; loves to play fetch and dance on her hind legs. We had to do a partial shave to help heal a hotspot, but she rebounded and is her gorgeous self. Maxxie is still puppyish, but she is very sweet. Maxxie, has been adopted by a wonderful family; now has mom, dad, and 8yo Sheltie brother. Two years later, Julie reports Maxxie and her brother, Dino, are bonded, and they couldn't be more delighted with their precious girl. They all came to the 5th Anniversary Picnic and had a delightful time sharing their stories with other adoptive homes. |
Before Adoption, all HSS Shelties are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and treated for initial ailments as possible within the scope of our rescue program.
